@topperarnold, are you still reading the novel, LRDS? I was wondering what you thought of it in general: easy/hard to read, entertaining/boring, etc. I just downloaded the Kindle version of Doña Flor y sus dos maridos, and I can't decide which book to read first!

Um. I'm not sure how to answer. If I can get a solid chunk of time to read it doesn't feel too hard, but it is hard if I'm only getting a few minutes to read. I guess that sounds weird. I do find it very interesting. I just wish I could find more time to read.

I've got a sample of Doña Flor on Google books, but I also have Cacao by the same author which sounds more interesting to me.

The sad thing is when I read Spanish (or English) I tend to pick super easy stuff. I don't want to tax my brain. 🤣 So right now I'm reading the second Soy Luna book (super easy Spanish) and a middle grade book about a modern day Mayan demigod called The Storm Runner. The latter is for a Latinx Book Club I'm participating in.

Thanks, Sara! I do know what you mean about it being tough to resume where you were reading before, when the book is not in your native language. I read another novel by the author of Doña Flor, called Gabriela, clavo y canela, and I have to admit to disliking it. It featured one of those male-fantasy women, who are drop-dead gorgeous and always eager for sex, not to mention an exceptional cook! LOL

Honestly I always kind of struggle with any sort of narco book. I've tried reading several (admitedly non-fiction) and I've never been able to finish them. Luckily, LRDS is fiction and doesn't feel as dry.

I perused the Doña Flor sample and maybe I will give it a try. For sure I will give the first episode of the show a try. Sergio Muir seems to be everywhere these days. He was also in a recent Spanish series, Hospital Valle Norte...which I didn't watch but I saw some stills with him.

The only narco book I've ever read happened to be my first time reading a novel in Spanish. I really lucked out, because it was a very short novel and quite readable. It's the book that started the whole "Sin senos" series, but the book was called Sin tetas no hay paraíso, and the original Colombian novela with just 23 episodes followed it closely. The other telenovelas all stretched out the plot and diluted its effectiveness, IMHO.

That's actually one of the Narcos left unfinished on my bookshelf along with Miss Narco and El cartel de los sapos.

I don't really enjoy the subject matter for reading purposes. Since I can only take it in small doses, it's better for me to watch it in a movie or in a novela that doesn't drag on too long.

Garou. My least favorite narco. I like that Teresa refused to transport for him and that she wanted to make sure the cops would bust his brothels and let the women go, but it still kind of falls short. How did she know the police wouldn't try to press charges on the workers in the brothels? And what about rehab?

I feel so bad because I had every intention of watching this special edition to refresh my memory and I haven't watched more than the first 2 episodes? Maybe I'll watch this week at  least.

I've only managed to read two chapters in the book. 😔
